Are your thoughts controlling you?

I’m in London today, and had an important meeting scheduled for the morning, followed by a lunch with a client / friend.

Yesterday the meeting was postponed. Then the dilemma hit me:

“I can’t possibly justify going into London just for an enjoyable lunch”.

I started thinking about arranging another meeting or 2 to “justify” the trip, or potentially cancelling the lunch and rescheduling.

This head chatter is very common for me – the need to be productive, to provide, to be efficient with my time.

And then this morning it struck me. “Justify”? Justify to who?

Today is a lovely day – the sun is shining, I love walking and I love walking across London.

So now I have decided to walk to the station, walk from Paddington to Euston for lunch, and back. I may listen to something en-route, or I may not.

I will love every minute of that, it will also allow some valuable thinking time, and in any case my mind and body will thank me. And I will enjoy the lunch even more.

I emailed my client / friend saying I may be dressed rather more casually today so that I can walk rather than tube across London. His response was “no problem, me too”.

The point of this is 5 years ago I would NEVER have allowed myself to do this. Why? Because of my embedded head chatter.

Now, I hear it and choose whether it’s helpful or not, and if it’s not I put it straight.

If you want to learn how to get your head chatter to work for you, just reach out.

Anyway, got to dash, I'm off to get my hiking shoes on! 😊
